Possible Alternative to Bottom Pain t?

Just now, I ran across this super hydrophobic find.

They say no products are yet commercially available, but should be mid 2012.

I immediately thought of an alternative to bottom paint, or at least as an active ingredient in it.

Excellant for rain gear! Just how long would it stay on the bottom of a boat?

Maybe in time!

As I understand it, the water never forms weak bonds with the material, so friction between the water and the hull may be a lot less- very interesting.

Use as an anti fouling coating would seem to be a no-brainer. If this was feasible, why didn't they demo its use as such? Doesn't seem to be formulated for constant immersion.

They are not showing it as a barrier, just as a repellent.
I think over time it still brakes down, as shown with the cell phone. It needs to last, and until that is resolved it's only good as a repellent.

OMFG.

I want in on this.

Sounds too good to be true.

Re: Possible alternative to bottom paint?

It looks like a good idea for marine electronics right now.

Re: Possible alternative to bottom paint?

Now the next question!

What does it take to get it applied properly?

It would be a long time before a change over. A lot of the PNW boaters don't even know about the ban yet.

Re: Possible alternative to bottom paint?

I wonder if that is the same as this stuff. If so, you'd need to put the boat in a box and create a vacuum according to the videos on the website.

Well, it is six years before it takes place in Washington and there isn't one in the rest of the PNW at least as far as this PNW boater knows.
