Place for Gas Bottles

Hi All
I read in the Good Old Boat magazine about putting your gas bottles on the corner of the anchor well inside a suitably protected container. They have used PVC pipe. The anchor well is self draining so there would be no buildup of gas and it has a sealed bulkhead behind it.
What are your thoughts on this idea? Pros? Cons?

That sounds like a good way to store them. I have a propane locker and never needed to store bottles elswhere. Friends of mine dont have a locker so I may mention this to them.

Only two objections I can think of are:
1) Weight forward (40" steel monos wouldn't consider that much of a problem)
and
2) A long run of of tubing/hose/fittings etc. to get the propane aft to the stove.

Mine is a centre cockpit with the galley actually closer to the bow. I was going to put it under the seats behind the rear cabin till I heard about this. I was just after the CF's thoughts.

I think they're talking about storage of spare bottles.

Yes you are right. But what about a place for a 9 lb bottle. Is there any negatives beside the weight? Btw my ketch is 40ft so one bottle in the bow is ok for weight.

I don't think 9lbs is going to affect your trim very much It would be like adding another 9 feet of chain...

I have to figure out where to place my passage bottles. My dufour 35 has a very small pinched stern. Have a feeling it is going to have to hold 2x20lb tanks. It is starting to get very crowded back there!IMG_0015.JPGIMG_0015.JPG Nope that is not working

Welcome to the cruising world where sticking a quart into a pint pot is an everyday worry!

If you do end up with your bottles on the stern rail, think about galvanized bottles or ss ones or such. Also, try to get the regulator somewhere out of the salt spray, 'cause they don't much like that environment.

Same worries about putting them into the chain locker... lotsa salt water hosing through most of those places at times. The weight factor is vanishingly small compared to ground tackle.

Another thing to consider....I've got a forward bridge deck anchor / storage hatch and although it's completely sealed from the interior living spaces of the boat, the electric windlass is also bolted to a structural bulkhead that is inside this area. I was planning on venting this through to the underside of the bridge deck between the hulls ( she's a cat) but for other people, possible ignition sources are obviously something to be aware of.

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I hadn't considered the salty environment. Regulators definitely wouldn't like it.

That pretty well says it all. Bottles/tanks get their own locker.
