Pick a lettering design....

I'm getting lettering put on the boat this week. Help me choose a design. I'm located in Panama City Florida but I'd rather put the name of our local bay on the boat, seems more fun.

Thoughts?

The boat isn't black.
No the graphic of the dog isn't black, it looked weird in solid black.
Yes we have a black lab named Sailor.

I think the bottom sample looks best, and will be easiest read from a distance, making it easier for your friends to spot your boat.

Check local laws for home port.

I'm with Ann, number 3 The best looking and easiest to read.

Dutch law prevents me from simply picking a home port I like, but no clue as to the laws that apply to you(r location).

I agree with Ann T. Cate. I pass by vessels that I sometimes have cause to contact on the VHF. Sometimes I am unable to read the name even with a good pair of binoculars. Imagine seeing these two vessels at a half mile or mile distance,





With your best choice, the bottom one, people will likely see "Black Dog", but not know what the smudge is between theses words or underneath!

Since this is still in the planning stage, maybe you can find a more Lab looking graphic to represent Sailor, that one looks more like a spaniel to me....

Does Florida even require a name and a home port? Here in MA the only legal requirement is that the boat display it's assigned reg. numbers on both sides of the bow (or attached to the lifelines) and a state issued bi-annual reg. sticker on the port side.

I don't believe there's any state requirement for a name or home port in Florida. If the vessel is Documented, then the letters need to be no less than 4 inches high.

Be aware that the Black Dog chain of restaurants may have something to say about your design if they get wind of it. The Black Dog

My suggestion would be to make sure your lettering does not infringe on any trademarks or copyrights that they own. No one wants a cease and desist letter.

Another vote for #3 here. Nice and clear, easy to recognize.

The way I read it, if the vessel is CG Documented, it has to have the ship's name on either side and a place name (from a place in the US) as it's home port on the stern.

In our marina there are boats listing land-locked home ports e.g. from Tempe, Ariz and Austin, TX. and also from named bodies of water (Jordan Creek, Little Creek, etc.) so any place-name will do fine.

State registered vehicles do not require home port, or even a boat name, only registration decals and annual renewal stickers; at least that's true here in NC
