The Sailboat site is a wealth of information but unfortunately no detail on the foil design😕

Re: Peterson 33 Keel

I'd consider starting by contacting a reputable Naval Architect, like say this guy, Douglas Blair Peterson
1265 Rosecrans St, San Diego, CA 92106
(619) 222-3663

I've no idea if the info is current or correct but I copied it from an older post on here. From the sounds of it the phone number is no longer current but you could try the snail mail route.

Or you could try Bill Tripp, apparently he used to work for Peterson before he started his own design firm in 1984. That or I'm sure for a fee any NA would be willing to design you a suitable keel to you design parameters. People will sometimes have a new keel made if their current isn't to their liking or doesn't fit their use for a boat.

Either way good luck you've an awful lot of work ahead of you to finish a boat from a bare hull with no keel or rudder. Do you have experience in the field of yacht building ect? Where'd you find the hull?

Re: Peterson 33 Keel

Yacht Building? - no
30 odd years of experience with woodwork (cabinets/ furniture, etc)
The Hull& deck I got from someone else who thought they could undertake the project but, aside from collecting bits and pieces (Mast, Boom, Rigging, Inboard motor, Saildrive, etc) they did very little.

I have few qualms about the work - the difficulties I thing are more the rudder and keel issue which I must get right to avoid messing up the stability curve and up-wind performance.

Re: Peterson 33 Keel

Man oh man... I think you've got a long hard uphill road ahead of you with this project...

Question #1 has to be: Why have the keel and rudder been stripped? Certainly sounds like the boat was being scrapped... As if... there's significant structural damage to the hull... You need to figure this out before you invest too much time and money...

The dude designed a ton of boats to be sure...

The only way I see you duplicating the keel and rudder sections is to find some passionate owners who are willing to help...

Here's some more OLD info from another forum
Doug Peterson 34 - Cruiser Log World Cruising & Sailing Forums

And a 44 owners group:
Peterson Cutter Website - Welcome

Building a rudder ain't that hard... Just a lot of work... Almost any fairly close design is likely to do OK, and be able to be refined after you get some time behind the helm...

You need somebody who knows sailboats to look at this before you continue...

Where ya at?

Re: Peterson 33 Keel

Thank you...

I am in South Africa

Hull, deck, mast and boom are new - the boat has never been launched - seems they simply never got round to acquiring the rudder & keel

I will post a picture in 30 mins or so

You may have something there then... Let's hope the thing has been out of the weather and somewhat protected.... How long has she been sitting?

Didn't work...

Go to "manage attachments" under the posting box, click, browse, upload, close box... I usually hit preview post when I attach pics to be sure they look right and/or are there...

WOWSA!!!

The only way this hull could be more bare would be minus the paint!

Now we need lots more pics... Probably not even holed for the keel or rudder yet???

Re: Peterson 33 Keel

Well it sounds like you should be able to bang together a decent interior any ways. I agree though you'll be learning alot on the fly! There's nothing wrong with that, that's usually how I learn best. It's also how I've made a majority of my mistakes... You just have to be willing to pay for them

I think there are two ways to go but both end up with finding a company to cast the keel. They will either have an inhouse designer or be able to steer you to one. I'd imagine, if you can't connect with Mr Peterson, that you'll end up paying a NA a fair chunk of boat dollars to do the design, I'm totally guessing but maybe $1000US, more?

Re: Peterson 33 Keel

Either way one thing is clear, you've got more brass in your ba...errr umm keel than I or many here do to take on such a project. Cudos and cheers to you mate.
