Perkins 4.236

Im not ready for the engine yet, just planning ahead, but I can't seem to find anyone that sells a new marinized perkins 4.236. Does anyone have a link to the perkins store in the US? I can find rebuilds, but I dont have a core to trade in.

The 4.236 was discontinued many years ago. There is no way this engine will meet with the new EPA or CE requirements.

I suggest that you research the new engines from Beta Marine, Yanmar, Volvo, Perkins etc and look for a current engine. I am sure that someone will chip in because I didn't mention their preferred engine brand but you are starting to look in the right place. Research on the web can provide mixed results but this forum can provide a wide range of answers.

We had a W-58 same as the Perkins and after a few years of having difficulty finding parts even from TAD and having to fabricate a few parts that were unavailable we bit the bullet and bought a Beta 50. I believe that a rebuild kit in not even available for that Perkins, used to have a 4-108 in last boat and it was much better supported. Love our Beta

Motor-sailer or sailboat with a diesel auxiliary motor? Because 85hp is in the auxiliary range. And what's your displacement?

Hey Kevin. Its a 50 ft Roberts designed Ketch. The specks call for 30 -60 Hp. No gen set on board. 20 tons

I believe conventional wisdom is 2 to 2.5 hp per 1,000 lbs. That would mean 80 - 100 hp engine, give or take. I would hate to try to motor against any wind with a 30 hp motor but a 60 hp would probably do okay...just. With a 60 hp motor I would want to be able to disable the alternator for more useable shaft power if the going got tough.

I was thinking the same thing. More power, not for increasing hull speed, but to maintain it when the going gets tough. Something else to consider is that I will have a scuba compressor running of the front of the engine.

When anti freeze showed up in the oil, it was the 2-3 month delay on getting parts for my 23 year old Westbeke 58 that finally lead to a new Beta.
