Painting over tin-based bottom paint

Hello,

I hope someone can help? I am trying to decide which bottom paint to use for my situation. I recently purchased a boat that has tin based paint on the bottom. I will be using the boat in mostly warm waters for 1-2 years. I was planning on using Trinidad SR after lightly sanding the existing paint. I also have looked at Blue Water's product and spoke with the tech there. He said I would need to apply a primer first to seal in the Tin. Of course I want to do as little work as possible, but will do what I have to do to get it right.

Thanks for any inputs,
Dave

Tin?? Are you sure??? Itwas discontunued 15years or more ago.
Is it still working???
OK, I suggest you get a high pressure water blast. Although you haven't said what the boat material is, I presume it is glass.
DON'T SAND!! It's really nasty stuff. I suggest you get an expert to remove it if you are going to go the sanding route. You need some good protective gear.
You should be able to go on top with a standard modern day anti-foul. Copper and Tin shouln't react and if it is really old, there is probably little active tin left anyway. As long as the old stuff is adhearing well, then there will be no issue with the new anti-foul adhearing.
