Painting Non-Skid - Recommendations?

As the OP, I guess I should have posted this earlier. I'm seriously considering just doing this in Brightside with the flattening agent and NO NONSKID.

Here is Interlux's response to my question:

Interdeck is a great product as it already contains a Non-Skid compound as well as having a satin finish directly out of the can. Basically the paint is ready to apply direct from the can. If you prefer a product which is a bit harder and more abrasion resistant, I would recommend using Brightside One Part Polyurethane. Brightside will last a bit longer then Interdeck and will be a bit easier to clean too. If you choose to go with the Brightside I would recommend using the Flattening Agent For One Part Finishes YMA715 to reduce the gloss some as well as add some Intergrip Non Skid Compound (4-6 ounces per quart of paint) to help provide a slip resistant surface. Both the Interdeck and Brightside would be compatible with the paint which is currently on the surface. If you would like the hardest and most abrasion resistant, longest lasting finish I would recommend going with Perfection. If you do choose to go this route I would recommend soaking a rag with 2333N or 2316N and placing it on the painted deck and let it sit for 24 hours, then remove the rag and see if there are any signs of lifting, blistering or wrinkling, if so I would recommend not using the Perfection as the solvents will be too aggressive. If you do choose to go with Perfection I would recommend adding some of the Flattening Agent For Two Part Finishes to reduce the gloss as well as adding Intergrip Non Skid Compound to provide a non skid surface. When looking to create or mix you own color we recommend mixing the same product together ex:
Brightside White Y4359 with Brightside Largo Blue Y4100 or Interdeck Gray YJF684 with Interdeck White YJB000. I have attached product data sheets for all products mentions above for your reference.

I recently did the non-skid on my decks. I used glass beads as per bead-blasting to get the texture.

I masked, painted the decks with a roller, then while the paint was wet, sprinkled glass beads using a flour sifter.

Next day I blew the excess loose beads off, and rolled on another coat of paint.










The glass beads are available in a couple of sizes, so you can have as coarse or smooth a finish as you want. I went fairly coarse, the advantages being that the glass will pretty much never wear out, only the paint, and I can repaint at least a couple of times in future and still have good grip.

Another plus of glass beads is that when the paint wears off they don't show up black - the decks actually get a bit of a sparkle to them, as the glass beads work like the reflective paint used on roads.

I used the same colour as the rest of the boat, the texture makes it look just a little darker.

Boy, that looks nice. Hadn't thought of using blast bead. I wonder if it's reflectivity will keep the deck cooler?

30+ year old boat. I sanded down the original C&C stippled gelcoat roughdeck (that stuff was sturdy!!) because it was dirty and discoloured. Prepped carefully. Used Interlux primer coat. Painted Matterhorn White Brightside flattened 50-50 for the trim, overlapping into the nonskid area an inch or so. Laid down thin blue vinyl tape on the Brightside to mask off the edges for the Interdeck, and then covered the outer edges of that with Painters' Green masking tape. Rolled on grey Interdeck two coats. Did all this over a few weeks indoors during winter in controlled heat, allowing paint to dry well.

After one season, we really like the Interdeck. Feels very secure under foot, and looks great. The edges of the Interdeck paint areas are nice and sharp. Nobody complaining about feeling uncomfortable sitting on the Interdeck, or walking on it in bare feet, but I wouldn't scramble around on unprotected hands and knees. It got surprisingly warm to bare feet in the direct sun on the hottest day of the summer, but a quick swim fixed that.
