Re: One Of The Worst Fouled Bottoms I've Ever Come Across

That boat needs a haul out anyway, so would seem that maybe pressure washing would be the way to go.

Many boatyards won’t haul a boat with that much growth on it.

I imagine it would be slick as snot like that. The straps might slip off, not too safe to haul out.

A spell of fresh water would probably kill it all but not "remove" it.

At least the boat has protection from any potential groundings

I figure a couple hours of quality time with a heavy duty scraper gets the job done. That's $185/hour. I don't know about you but in my book, that's a decent wage.

A few days would do it.

Would your Remora Solo actually cut through that or would other measures need to be taken first?

Underlying all the soft growth is a mat of mature mussels. Until the Remora metal-blade brush is available (currently being developed), this would b a job for a hand-held scraper.

We last painted with ablative a couple of years ago and there is not much left. Sailing around the tropics I was cleaning the bottom every 2 weeks or so. When we got to Chile I found that our speed under power was creeping up. I dove the bottom after a month, expecting the worst, but found that not only had all the growth died, it had fallen off. The props and shaft were spotless and even the waterline had lost it's beard.

I don't know whether the water is just too cold, or maybe it's the tannins flowing in from the rivers or all the toxic crap from the salmoneras, but after 3 months the bottom is still clean.

Hey man, the bay area is a tough market to find somewhere to live. Then you come along and scrape away a perfectly suitable habitat. Talk about underwater gentrification!
