Oil Filter Problem

I have a 1974 Challenger with a Chrysler-nissen diesel. I have been changing the oil for years, and do to the design its always a real mess as the filter case is on top of the filter. When you remove the case a quart of dirty oil goes into the bilge. I make every effort to not let that happen but sometimes a little gets past my recovery effort. Does anybody have a better system to capture the oil. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Gary

I don't know about your room but I saw a guy once cut the bottom of a plastic 2 liter milk jug that he was able to squeeze in under the housing. Even if you couldn't get the jug back out without spilling you could then use the oil siphon to siphon the oil from teh "catpive" jug.

Your access does look very tight though.

Gary, if you can't fit any container under it, how bout a 1 or 2 gallon zip loc bag? I would use the "freezer bags" since they are heavier duty and you might use double bags for extra security.

Older Detroits are like that.

I bought a small bucket from Home-Depot that I cut down to fit.....I left it on the boat....for the next "lucky fellow" i.e. owner.

FWIW....you do uses a Torque wrench when putting those on?

I know with DD you can't just tighten it up

You might consider as we did on a previous engine, installing a kit for a remote mount for the oil filter. It made changing simple and clean. I am sure there is one that will fit your engine. Chuck
