'Oh Joy' Restoration - 9/16/09

Since there's gonna be so many, I decided to start dating them.

We made progress on the bulwarks once I got some more tools for the job. As you can see, the screws are monsters and those stainless spikes they used weren't small either.

I cleaned it up off the boat to show the true color of the wood. It still needs bleaching and some minor repairs.

This is the mess it left. Note the ragged screw holes that weren't in either the sheer plank or the deck but between the two.

The boom is cleaning up nicely.

Nicely done Charlie. If you're glassing the deck, we ran the glass up the inside of the balwark (toe-rail) to the caprail with a fillet between the rail and the deck. It made for a stiffer connection than just the screws. Even if you don't have a seperate cap, you may still be able to do a fillet.

I don't think I'll glass the deck. I'll go back with marine ply and then decide on a coating after I see if the house has to be lifted. If not, Sanitred. If so, original canvas layout with Sanitred underneath for a sealer.

I thought you already had the house off? Or was that earlier and the cabin is back on?

Nope. I haven't pulled it off yet. I'm hoping to avoid that but it's looking less likely. Pulling the house will add a couple of weeks to the job with all of the stripping of paint and varnish inside, looking for all of the hidden fasteners that I know are gonna be there. The actual bolts are easy to find but there's always something else hidden.... Then I have to figure out how to lift it off without destroying it. I'll probably rig blocks from the rafters and run straps through the portholes. It probably weighs about 1,000 Lbs..

Get a jamb saw and you can cut a flush notch in the cabin sides to slide in your (thin) ply overlay. (Or cut the fasteners)

Like this:FREE SHIPPING — Q.E.P. Industrial Grade (Corded) Jamb Saw — 7.5 Amp, 6in. Dia. | Circular Saws | Northern Tool + Equipment
