'Oh Joy' Restoration - 02/07/10

Took a drive up to Oh Joy before the game since I haven't been since last weekend. I scraped some paint aft and applied more stripper. While I was there, I made up another foredeck beam. Then I started checking them for curvature and uniform height across the entire foredeck. I used a very square floor board to measure.

They look really close, within 1/16" and dead nuts on three of the four so far.



I then took a look at the Port side deck beams.



A couple of them were a touch too tall and needed some passes on the belt sander which is sitting in the V-Berth at the moment. Another one will need to be redone because it's too short in height by about 1/4".

Why not just epoxy (laminate) a 1/4" shim on the one that's low? I was once told the main difference between an amateur and a pro is the ability to hide mistakes!

Oh, I could but the curvature is too flat which would cause twist and stress in the decking ply. While it would work, it would eventually start to work loose. I figure two outta 40+ ain't bad.

Keep in mind that in theory the beams upper surfaces are not in a straight line, but follow the sheer line when viewed from the horizontal, in profile. You're really constructing a compound form. Those joints are tops

I found that out. I did the top of the beam with a hammer and chisel followed with the sander. Sometimes the old ways are the only ways to do things. Doing a taper from 1/2" to nothing by the aft end was challenging. Nothing quite like a very sharp chisel. It's sharp enough to shave wet hair on your arm.

You certainly are finding some nice wood. I am really jealous. I have to drive 100 miles just to get a piece of marine ply. Aaaarghhh!
