Nice for oil platforms, but on a multihull, it would feel like the bottom needs a scrub.
Imho, millions of spiky things, even on a tiny scale would give a lot of drag.

Same principle that shark skin uses.

Not necessarily, it could enhance laminar flow control.
Apparently in some instances a fluid whether it be air or water will shear against itself with less drag than shear against a smooth surface.
In other words it could possibly bring out some different hull shapes eventually, that would have less drag than current shapes do even if very smooth.
Not saying it would, just saying it’s possible.

Look at vortex generators, just as a brief look, you would think they would be draggy as heck, but if they enhance the boundary layer and prevent flow separation, they can reduce drag.

In other words, not saying it would work, just saying it’s possible is all.

Re: New type of antifouling?

I am not an aeronautical engineer, but don't those vortex generators on airplane wings help in focusing lift to offset flow from the plane's body (or something like that)?
The bottom spiky stuff is non directional cylindrical hairs. It's not anything like a vortex generator. I cannot imagine they would generate any "lift", only drag.
Even then, as in the video, a sea urchin has muscles to move its spikes around to move around and possibly to get rid of anyone hoping to hitch a ride on them.
The tiny hairs on this adhesive mat although at right angles to the surface, are motionless and passive.

I think I'll wait to see the "Film at 11".
