Need Advice on Interior Wood Finish

Hi all. I am thinking the interior wood may need some attention soon. I think it may be oiled teak but not positive. Currently I just use soap and water to clean it up and it looks pretty good. But soon will need more than that. It is an 89 Pearson if anyone knows what finish they used back then. The only area that looks bad is top of chart table with scratches. I could do something different there and am wondering how to protect that better. Thanks!

My old boat was finished in a similar manner. I am stripping it all down to bare wood and varnishing. 5 layers gloss, 1 top coat of satin and it looks beautiful. It is a lot of work, but I wanted the good result.

Just a thought.
I am fortunate enough to have a very good friend that has a crewed charter operation on a 58’ SA Cat. You know the ones that charge 15 to 20 K a week to spoil the hell out of their guests. Anyhow they use diluted sprays of white vinegar to clean the wood parts. I would lay off the soap and water. Just recondition the table top. FWIW

teak oil brings up tired woodwork beautiffully,and vinegar used first takes off greasy deposits

An oiled finish for interior teak is indeed pretty. What most people are not aware of is that a proper job is very labor intensive. Many coats, with sanding to completely fill the grain. The simpler solution would be something like a satin finish varnish or gloss depending on your preference. On my last boat I used satin finish for the large surfaces and high gloss for the trim. Not too shoddy.

The use of vinegar is, or so I understand from folks with wooden boats, to prevent rot. One gentlemen with a 40 ft Alden schooner circa 1930(?) had a spray bottle of vinegar and was always crawling through his boat spraying it about.

Beautiful work on that wood. See the pieces come alive with beautiful grain.

Great job, wish I had the boat, so I could have a need, to get the patience, to have the skill, to do a job just as good!

hehe thats one of the reasons I took the plunge on it. I wanted to learn these things. Can't ask for a better hobby.

That really does look nice. A lot of work I'm sure but interiors can last a long time.

Thanks. I will try the spray vinegar. And maybe work on a section inside a cabinet door with teak oil and sanding to see how it looks. Again if anyone can tell that what I have now is oil please let me know.

try rubbing the surface with acetone in a small test patch,if it comes up shiny or sticky then it is laquer or varnish,

if it washes out and you get bare wood then it was oiled.

reccomend not sanding then oiling,only sand if you intend to varnish.

That looks good.
I'd be interested to know your thinking in using gloss for 5 layers, and then finishing off with satin.

From your picture It’s really hard to tell. If it’s just normal teak oil the surface should still show a little grain and be somewhat textured. Look at the grain in the wood, if sealer was used the area between the grains should look at least a little filled in. If it’s teak that hasn’t been oiled in awhile it should absorb water.

Thanks all. Now I think I can determine if it's oiled or not and will do some testing. What is good for top of chart table? After I get it all nice again should I put something down on it so I'm not dragging stuff across it and poking it with dividers?
