Clearly wasn't warm enough, so out comes the red pigment. It must be used in very small amounts. I use little stir sticks split lengthwise to something that resembles a long matchstick. You can clearly see in the last close up that it needs more red pigment.

The last step is taken- a small spot is prepped and a small blend is sprayed to check that the color is correct after being catalyzed and curing. Rules of thumb- a too light mismatch is better than too dark. Sneak up on it. Light colors tend to cure darker, dark colors tend to cure lighter. Cool colors cure warmer, warm colors cure cooler. But don't try to match anything but off whites until you get good! It is not easy...

This is a three hour match for five gallons. Pretty standard fare. It was a dead match on the first cure test, no further adjustment required. The last pics are of the test blend after finishing.

You'll like it minaret. If you do Google +, gmail, etc. you'll find it begins to dominate your life online! So far my gmail, youtube, blogger all integrated with Google+ & Chrome. No way around it. The software engineers & marketing guys did their work well.

You must have the patience of a saint to color match like that. I could never do it. I'm color blind! Shades of grey are no problem though!

Hey Minaret, quick barrier coat question again..

I'm just wrapping up longboarding the hull

and will be starting to layer on the interprotect 2000e shortly. I know more mils more betta up to a point. The manufacturer recommends 6 coats or so. The yard here often puts 14 on. I've heard of someone doing 18. What do you do?

I will be prepping the bottom after longboarding with a few soapy washdowns and 202 solvent.

Obviously method of application is very important. Interlux wants 10 mils DFT on 2000. You can get to that in three coats if you spray, four if you apply with a 3/8" nap roller. But then it doesn't look very good. I much prefer a 1/4" nap roller and six coats, though many prefer an odd number. This is because you can generally apply two coats a day, so on the last day you do a barrier coat in the AM and catch the bond with bottom paint in the afternoon. So do five, or seven, or do only one coat on one day and do six. I think 14 or 18 is p*ssing money directly down the drain! unless you have elected to skip the initial coats of epoxy and fairing. Then you might need that many just to get the pinholes to fill...

You can get a wet mil gauge for a few bucks if you look around. This will tell you how much you are applying wet per coat. Dry mil gauges that work are expensive. Obviously DFT ends up being less that WFT. By how much depends on the material. I'd say if you apply 15-20 wet mils you are fine.

I also 202 wipe with two rag technique at least three times. This is usually what it takes for the wet rag to come back clean, ie getting no more contamination off the bottom. Make sure to gear up heavily, 202 is no joke. If you spill it on asphalt it will eat a big hole through it before you can clean it up. Don't get it in your eye. Wear a respirator and heavy gloves, minimum.
