Rotten boat deck on a very big Hatteras. Can you tell I'm easily distracted by other projects?

I'm always surprised that this thread has already hit almost 20k views, but very few people post here. Perhaps when I start posting pics of some of the later cosmetic work people will have more questions about what I'm doing. I'll get around to it soon, it's going well.

Hope any info you may have gleaned from me has worked out well for you, and always feel free to ask away if you have any questions. Thanks for posting!
Right off the bat I want to say this is one of, if not the only, most favorite threads. Thank you for taking the time and energy to post.

It would be very helpful if your pictures had captions which explain what is being viewed in the picture. This is an alternative to stepping back from your subject, something you have previously explained you cannot do due to workspace limitations.

My pressing comment right now is about vacuum bagging the decks. I have bagged before but it was on molds or jigs. I am somewhat mystified how bagging works on a solid deck. It seems to me the negative pressure would create voids if not pull the build-up off the deck surface. Obviously I am in error yet I don't understand how if you don't have a "backing" (whole encapsulation of deck) that a good bond is achieved. The only thing I can think of is you are pulling down through the deck (into the cabin)

Again, I remain highly appreciate your efforts to share your knowledge.

Sure I can consult the Goracle but I'd rather hear from our own Glass Master.

Yeah, sorry but it's that damn iPhone. It really wants you to step back a few paces but I just don't have room in a tight boat shed. I'm trying on the captions.

Not sure exactly what you mean re: bagging. Is your concern about the screw holes in the deck? Or are you not understanding the purpose of bleeder?

Thanks for asking questions, Richard. I'm trying to make this stuff more accessible to the average boat owner, and empower people to try this stuff on their own more often. But sometimes I fear I'm doing the opposite...

You say that like it's a bad thing. I always tried to have multiple projects at once. It helps keep your mind straight, your self organized...if though it may not look it.

[QUOTE=minaret;1220519]Iphones will prove to be the bain of human existence.
From nearly illegible writing/editing features to crappy pictures and terrible microphones, the race to the bottom has technological help.

I *thought* the holes in the deck were simply to plug the previous screw holes. If you are using those holes for the bleeder I now understand.

To some perhaps the results of this thread are opposite of what you intend. I look at it this way, you are trying to bring them up, to increase their knowledge base, at least to dissuade them of the fear of working with glass. You dispense your professional knowledge which is oft times all you can hope to achieve.

Perhaps the lack of questions from your audience is due to perception in them that what you provide will come on handy at a later date but not now. Hence, there will be questions later but not know. Such is the way of internet forums. Still, do not be dissuaded.

Re: Nauticat 52 Refit

I'm still following avidly, Minaret.

I don't pipe up much, because I don't work in composites and because I'm trying to put in some hours on breaking the back of the design work for my own boat project, but it's always worth staying abreast of best practice in any field.

I say that partly out of sheer interest, and partly because great ideas and great procedures help to seed other great ideas & procedures, even in seemingly unrelated fields.
