Missing Chainplate Deck Covers

The last owner of my Cheoy Lee Offshore 41 removed all the deck hardware to replace the Teak decks and lost (or didnt keep) the little trim plates that slide down over the chaimplates to cover the exit openings at the deck.

I'd like to know what the thinking is on just not using these parts at all and sealing around the edges of the chainplates with some acceptable product?

I only have two or three of these little plates and re-making them would be VERY expensive.

So what would you use to seal this area and what are the pros and cons of not using the trim plates?

The trim pieces are for looks. A good sealant would do the real sealing job. The plate would cover the sealant from UV, but of course a plate won't really seal anything without the sealant. Today you have a lot more choices for sealants that would not need anything other than a neat job to look and work well.
