Re: Mirrors on Boats

Thanks all for the very good information again...

I think glass would be a bit large for a floor to ceiling mirror about 6' tall. Acrylic is definitely not cheap but I think we can do a halfway mirror made of glass that is cheaper. Thanks MJ and MarkJ!

Humm...Marko, I think you've had about enough single-handing.

Re: Mirrors on Boats

why would anyone put:

1) glass mirrors in a boat when you are damn well sure they will break in a roll and cut off someones head or just be a general safety issue if they do break?

2) make a boats interior look like some disco narcissic RV sex bus thing?

if you need light, put some ports in.

formosas,ct, hardins, force like mine-- all were built with mirrors in the master berth.is an intersting concept--- dunno why they placed huge glass mirrors there-- but they do last nicely.....mine is 35 yrs old---1976. original. one of only things left on boat that is original, actually!!! is weird, isnt it!!

Re: Mirrors on Boats

I would think people would like to put up a nice bright framed painting or photograph instead of a mirror - something pastoral or to do with land.

Stain glass is neat on a boat, and i like it, but not on me boat 4 sure...not a monkey thing to sport

Re: Mirrors on Boats

My partner bought a largish mirror for the head door, it's glass, thin around 3 mm

She's convinced it's OK, but I'm really nervous that it could shatter underway, while someone is in the head, and should we be far from medical help - things could get serious.

Anyone else think this is a concern?

Re: Mirrors on Boats

I think it's more likely to just get broken and make a mess rather than injure someone, but why not just get one of the "unbreakable" style mirrors instead? In my head, I hang backpacks and other things that swing around madly in heavy seas, could easily see a mirror on the wall getting broken at some point.

Re: Mirrors on Boats

We have a smallish (11"x14") acrylic mirror that I'm installing in the forward cabin this spring. We got the sheet from our local glass guy and put it inside a picture frame we had sitting around that looked right. It's 1/8" thick. I'm pretty confident it will work out. I tried getting a tempered glass mirror but they are no longer available. Apparently the tempering process has changed from using hanger clips to rollers and the mirror silvering tends to foul the rollers, so they can't do it any more.

In the more-or-less typical boat where one sits on the loo facing inboard with the door/mirror in front of them, I would imagine the chance of breakage would be greater than if the orientation of the door/head was rotated 90 degrees, ie., sitting on the throne facing forward, either facing the door or the door off to the side.
In any case, a lay-out where the rolling motion doesn't catapult you into the door/mirror.
