Mast Step Dry Roy and Fiberglass Crack at Stinger.

My vessel is a 1980 C&C Landfall 38. After 10 years sailing on SF Bay it was time to replace the old Navtec standing rigging. Once the mass was pulled I found dry rot and cracksClick image for larger version

Has any one in the community had a similar experience? The vessel is in dry dock at a reputable boatyard and I am waiting their diagnosis.

It's a PITA, but fixable. When I did mine, I had a stringer with some core rot that would require major destruction of the floor to replace, so I just bolted another stringer beside it fish plate style and dug out the rot on the original and filled it with thickened epoxy. When replacing the step, make sure to record the height and level or the original (You'll probably need to compensate the measurements to allow for any compression of the rotted original).

Hoping the stringer isn’t rotten but forecasting the worse.

The layout is a bit different and here's some pics of what I did. Looking at the pics, I recall now the the core was rotten entirely, so I dug it out and epoxied in new core, then bolted a new stringer (not shown) against this.

Most important thing is to ensure ALL the old wood is removed and everything is dried out. Dry rot is a fungus and will spread and infect the new wood if you dont

Great point - this weekend I will be continuing my investigation by removing the fiberglass at the stringers (where their is a crack) Have you had any success with products like Get - Rot (penetrating epoxy)?
