Man takes 14 years to build sailboat

Very impressive boat from start to finish. I can not even imagine sourcing all the different materials needed to finish the boat, let alone all the details to have everything fit together inside. Also, if I were him, I'd have that crane set the boat down in the pool, to do a flotation test and get some incredible photos.

This home-built boat has two design features I've never seen elsewhere but always wondered why they weren't more common: the propeller shaft skeg and propeller guard (between shaft skeg and rudder skeg). It always seems to me that an exposed shaft and propeller could lead to more potential incidents, or at least more worries.

There are boats with protected propellers between the full keel and the rudder, but those with a prop shaft and support never seem to have any protection. Does that mean it's not ever a problem, or so rare that it's not worth building or refitting such protection?

My father spend twenty years part-time in the spring, summer, and fall building a 37 ft strip planked teak yawl. See picture I posted on CF in photo gallery.

I kind of find it amazing that folks on Cruiser's Forum are amazed by this. There were many, many, many homebuilt, custom boats in the 60s and 70s. All materials. All designs and lots of innovation. Some folks took 2 years and some took 20. It was pretty common to meet cruisers back then who built ther own. My old friend built his 55 foot schooner in 9 years from start to launch. Another built his 48 foot sloop in 8 start to launch.

After many years of project boats and sailing I'd rather be sailing.

I can see the appeal of building a boat. Especially if the person is not ready to cast off the lines just yet. But, I would need a useable boat to sail during that time period. The Voyageur, 44 cruising cat's build, and Restless seem to be excellently executed builds. Amazing!

My thoughts exactly.

I would love to be able to build a boat in the fall, winter, and spring, but come summer I wouldn't touch it unless it was raining.

I always knew you were a brilliant Captain. I once assumed that I could do a better job than most the production designers and builders. After 40 plus years of tinkering with boats of all shapes and sizes I now realize how naive I was.
