Makita 9227C noise?

I picked up a used Makita 9227C for work on the boat that's suppose to be in excellent condition. Exterior it looks top notch, but upon turning it on I get a little noise I'm not sure of (sounds kind of like rocks tumbling). It increases with motor speed, but most easily noticed at lower speeds. It sound like it's inside the green part of the housing.

Here's a short video of it.

Is this normal, just the brushes or something else that needs attention?

Mine does not make that noise, sound to me like it's the bevel gears in the 90 degree part. Of course brushes are dead easy to check so start there.

Re: Makita 9227C noise?

I have a combo drill/hammer drill that sounds like that...

Not right. My guess is bearing. flat spotted or a ball missing. Or bevel gear meshing issue.

I am not shy and would open it up if it were mine.

Not to second guess but you got it used - did you not fire it up before laying down the boat bucks?

I am not a fan of used electrical tools but when I do buy them they have to be a super deal (like 20% of new price)

Dan, got it off ebay. Was described as lightly used and in excellent shape. Contacted seller and waiting on response.

Put a load on it and see if the sound goes away.

It doesn't go away with a load, get's louder.

Edit: Seller responded and said he will send a shipping label and refund money. Yes, I'm going through ebay to accomplish this.

Cool! Gotta love how eBay figured this stuff out with reputations and rankings and stuff.

Happy ending on the way I hope...

Re: Makita 9227C noise?

Seller already refunded my money, even before I had shipped item back. Emailed me a shipping label and I sent it out from work with our other UPS items. Can't ask for a better resolution.

I learned my lesson, bit the bullet and ordered a new one from a Authorized Makita Dealer. Got what I think is a real good deal on it, $188 with free shipping for the 9227cx3. Includes a storage bag and a 1yr. warranty.

I received the new one today and I am ashamed to admit it makes the same noise, though not as loud and goes away under load. This is a brand new one from a factory authorized dealer.
