Making Our Own Enclosure and Looking for Advice

Our boat has a great condition top, and front and front corner isinglass. Does not appear to be very hard to create a template to connect the trailing edges of the front corners, and the top. The most difficult part may be the rear section. Our thought is to use white sheets to create a template for each side. pin it up draw, mark out windows, etc, install zippers on the front edges and top, on both the side piece and top. (The top unzips off the frames for easy removal) leave the bottom extra long so we can be sure of exact fit. My wife is a very competent seamstress, and we have a hvy duty husqvarna, and accesss to a large commercial grade machine. We do have a line on the materials for a good wholesale priceI am also thinking we could save enough doing it ourselfs to buy a nice used sailrite machine, but if we can avoid it that would be fine unless its a Deal!
I am looking for advice from others who have done this. and any tips you can offer would be greastly appreciated. It just seems so expensive (2k plus) for something we are capaple of doing for a fraction of that.

Re: Making Our own enclosure& Looking for advice

Get a book on boat canvas. Sailrite sells them. Canvas makers usually use a heavy plastic with cross hatching on it for patterns. We thought we'd make our own enclosure as we had a dodger and bimini and a Sailrite sewing machine but it's not as easy as you think. The sewing is the easy part, designing is very difficult. I watched the canvas maker do our enclosure, lot of experience and skill involved. It might be easier for a cat but on our boat it was fairly complicated.
