Re: Making fiberglass shims for outboard bracket

I left green turtle for charleston and arrived a couple of days ago. From the berries, I sailed for the abacos to pick up my cousin for a few days. Highlights included a day lounging by the hopetown harbor lodge pool and reef for a day, and three days spent anchored off treasure cay enjoying the beautiful beach while a southwester beat up all the usual anchorages. Lowlight was sipping on a rum drink watching a squall go by, only to have my two single handing friends scream next to me, oh no we're dragging! This was followed by a smug smile on my part, that was replaced 30 seconds later by a realization that I was dragging too. Luckily I was already rowing out to render what help I could, but they had already gotten there and let out a bunch of scope for me. Thank god for friends! All in all, I much preferred the berries, with the best anchorage being the one between Devils and Hoffmanns in the lee of white, and the dry tortugas actually being the best part of the cruise so far.
Here's my photo tax!

And the best shot of all: the low opening up after beating into squall lines from 10 pm to 3 pm the next day.

The trip had started off well enough with a following wind from the Bahamas and what I expected to be an easy beam to ddw run to charleston along with the Gulf Stream, but the low off Florida hadn't dissipated as expected, and I found myself beating through 6-8 foot waves and performing the reef shimmy frequently, where I would drop everything but the last bit of main to forereach into the squall while I sat below, then raise it all to deal with the total lack of wind following the squall. Worst part of the outboard is that it couldn't be used in the washing machine, so I just sat getting rocked until the wind fell in. However, it's still attached, and started a treat to get me into charleston at 3 am after I realised I'd sailed past the same buoy three times in a dying wind.

Re: Making fiberglass shims for outboard bracket

Made it home to severna park, Maryland at midnight last night! The outboard really got a workout the last two weeks, going from 12 hours after months, to 70 hours in a matter of days
Thanks for all the help everyone, and it's good to be home!
