Made a Little Video On How to Clean a Fouled Hull

Before anyone says as much, and I mentioned it in the video, this is not how to clean a hull that has a nice coat of ablative paint. This is cleaning a fouled bottom that hasn't been seen in several months with a 3+ years paint job. If you skip ahead to 4:23 seconds you'll get to where I jump in. I thought this might be helpful for anyone who's planning on doing their own bottom work.

Ask your paint manufacturer for their recommended schedule and technique for maintenance. Generally it's going to involve a gentle carpet wiping slime away.

You did a really good job on the video - well done. But can I ask that as you mentioned that you were planning on hauling the boat out of the water where you would remove all of this gunk with high pressure water blasting then why would you go to all of the trouble of doing this underwater procedure beforehand? Maybe I am missing something but I don't really see the point when you could achieve all of this by blasting the hull then put on the anodes while on the hard with a clean hull. I mean no offence so please take my question which is of good intentions.

Hey guys, thanks so much! I used a GoPro 960 (the cheapest model). It has a big fish-eye lens, is waterproof down to 180', and comes with a head strap. Cost maybe ~$170. Edited the whole thing in Windows Movie Maker, which is free.

For sure. I just think everyone should take a minute and look at the cumulative cost of hull cleanings they pay for over the life of their boating careers, versus the cost of getting certified and getting gear.

Even a full rental setup for a day will cost roughly as much a hiring a diver (~$45), at least in San Diego.

And of course diving you can have fun and do it as a recreation plus do other boat items like check your anchor placement.

Yeah no worries and it's a very legitimate question!

The yard I want to take it to is a little ways off, and backing the boat out is in a rather tight spot so I like to have as much control and response as I can get. That, and it's possible that my "I'll have it hauled next month" might turn into "I'll have it hauled in the spring".

And finally although I didn't show it in the video, I rigged a bridle down under my bobstay mount. I'm pulling my bowsprit off and need an alternate attachment point for a temporary forward stay. That required me getting in the water as well.
