I assume you're referring to the Catalina 42 that was part of the Salty Dog rally.

Just read on a german site that some yachts of Salty Dawg Rally are in trouble. The 41" Ahimsa sunk but crew are safe, some Masts are broken, one sailor suffered by broken arm.

Re: lost another rudder!

Went to a few parties with these folks around boat show time in Annapolis. I was struck by the fact that while many of the participants are well-seasoned and prepared sailors, a few of them did not have adequate experience and were just trying to save money vs. going with the C1500.

I remember looking at the forecast and thinking that they should leave early, or wait until the second front had passed. There is no way I would have left when they did, which sandwiched them between fronts right on the stream. The organizers said that "they knew there would be rough weather". I really think if you're sitting in port and can stay in port vs. crossing the stream in dicey weather, you stay in port.

Good thing no one was lost. Will be interesting to see how this changes the event in future.

There is a lot of second-guessing going on out there about this rally, which is unfortunate, but unfortunately it is rather typical. One interesting thing about this rally is that they are publishing the SSB net on the internet. I really question whether that is wise. They are "broadcasting" emergency traffic. For instance there is the boat "Jammin(?)" (Catalina 42') is saying its "very uncomfortable" and "we're seeing 20 knot winds and 6-8 foot seas." I think they lost a rudder.

If I were in a questionable situation, I seriously wouldn't want my net conversation to be public-for many reasons. It just seems imprudent to me.

Re: Lost Another Rudder!

Sheesh, if one finds "20 kt winds and 6-8 foot seas very uncomfortable", one shouldn't go to sea. What in the world did they expect?

Re: Lost Another Rudder!

20kts and 6 to 8 ft seas and no rudder would be very uncomfortable I would think. You don't usually go to sea expecting this.

Re: Lost Another Rudder!

It really brings back up the question of whether most spade rudder designs are robust enough or offshore work. 6-8 ft seas and 20 knots of wind... really? I mean a boat needs to be much more forgiving than that.... Whats the count on failed rudders ....3?
