Loose Stanchion/Base???

My stanchions fit a loosely into their base/socket... meaning I can wiggle them a bit... I never thought this was an issue until my helpful marina neighbor gave me tips how I could repair them. The bases are fine, there are no cracks or signs of wear.
- Do I have a problem?
- Are these two piece base/stanchions supposed to fit tight? If so:
- can I repair/shim the connections or do I need to replace the stanchions.

It would be nice if the stanchions were a tight fit in the base but not always the case. If the base itself is secure and only the stanchion moving, wouldn't worry about it. If you do decide to replace the stanchions and bases, route out the core around any fasteners with a Dremel 199 bit, fill with with thickened epoxy and redrill the holes. Be sure you have good backing plates and reinstall.

If the wobbling bothers you, drill, tap, and either use a set screw, or through bolt.

Good suggestions. The bases are secure and have set screws... through bolts sound like a good idea. However, if it's not a safety issue, this upgrade will probably go on the low priority list.
