Life of a steel boat

What do people think is the useful life of a steel yacht in a saltwater environment? There are a couple of assumptions - it will have been professionally built and well maintained. But given those conditions, does the steel boat still have a life - fifteen years? Twenty years? Thirty years? More? Less?

Re: Life of a steel boat

Given the conditions of professionally/properly built and properly maintained, I think its life span is almost indefinite, but neglect causes problems faster in metal boats than FRP boats. Just my 2 cents worth._____Grant.

Re: Life of a steel boat

The life of a steel boat has 3 stages: It's built...it rusts...it's gone. The two I know of have been in the middle stage for 28 years and 40ish years...with no immediate plans to enter the last stage. That's my smart ass way of saying there's no reason it would be a fixed number....just like a wood boat...it depends!

Bob
I've used an Epsom Perfection V370 on B&W and colur negatives together with slides with fair results.
Image for demonstration only. The boat was ferro, not steel.

Re: Life of a steel boat

Steel barges for commercial transport last 25 t0 30 years. Sections of steel are easily replaced if they do rust, so you can keep a steel boat going forever, just takes money and time.

I know of a 54 year old tugboat made of steel and still going strong. During its life there have been several sections of playing replaced. But with a well thought out boat this isn't a major ordeal

I think there is no limit if all maintenance is done well and on time. You can look up the half-decay time in tables though.
