Lewmar Winch Maintenance ?

Hi all,

I have several 'old' lewmar 2speed winches on my ship (no selftail).
And i would like to know how to maintain them. They are a bit noisy, and i think they need some lubrication.

How to disassemble the winch? I dont have a manual.

On the top of the winch, there seems to be some sort of clip. But does it require a special tool? or can i use pliers?
And what to do afther that?

I dont want to wreck these winches..
Also i dont have a photo, but they look a bit like this:

But mine have the fake chrome falling off..

Can anybody help?

Sorry, didn't know you had a short fuse. No need to use certain body parts for thanking me.
All you needed to do was click on 'support', 'product literature' and you would have found a nice PDF and even some Youtube movies. Too hard?

Are you sure you are an IT specialist?

Biggest mistake people seem to love with servicing winches is to put heavy grease in them.

Clean all the grease out and put in some oil and keep the lube light.

You will need to service them once per year at least But they will work better.

I dont have a short fuse, i just dislike these sort of reactions. Forums are all about asking questions, and starting discussions.

I have a set of old winches, and i really don't want to break them. I've been looking at that manual which i allready downloaded for several days now, and i didn't get a good feeling about removing that circlip. So, just to double check it, i ask a question here. And then i get a cheap and childish response.. YES i've seen the youtube videos, and yes i've googled around..

New winches don't come cheap, so better to check twice (or more), than ****-up once.

As stated, i'm an IT specialist.. Not a maintenance guy, so i can safely say that i suck at doing maintenance on a winch.. But i learn new things every day. :P

Ah great tip. Thanks.
The first time is always the hardest, so doing it regularly will not be such a big deal.. if i dont kill the winches the first time

One tip I will pass along for winch happiness. In a discussion a couple weeks ago with a boat mechanic/rigger he was of the opinion that dark colored winch covers were a no no. Reason was they baked the winches turning the grease hard. He also thought that unless you sailed very frequently or were racing a lot that once every couple years was fine for cleaning and lubing.

On tips

As you pull off any bit lay it out on paper towel in sequential order.

It goes back in that order.

Sounds silly, but there are so many bits in the dang things!

Ah, great tips..

Well i've bought this ship from my parents last year (they were feeling to old to sail, and now they own a big motor cruiser.. *yuck*). And i can safely say, that these winches haven't been cleaned/lubed in 10 years..

My father never tried to open them, i think he's scared of them.. And he owned the ship for the last 10 years..

So i hope the winches are not in bad shape, otherwise they will be replaced for ST's

Ah, LOL, it seems that i've posted a wrong reference picture..
It looks like that i have the "Early standard winches"

See: Lewmar Winch Schematics

"No more spare parts, and no more support available." Hmm..

A friend of mine says that these winches have to be removed off the deck before they can be maintained? So removing the circlip, and pulling of the drum isn't an option with this type?

Does anybody know if this is true? I cannot find any note of these early winches in the manual..

OK, here's my 10 cents.

You should be able to pry of the retaining clip on the top with a small screw driver or just your nails. Don't force them up but bend just enough to leave the groove. Lewmar recommends using a watertight grease (not oil); I never used anything else but the grease with good results.

First time it was a filthy operation; lots of grease and dirt; the hardest was cleaning the lot. I had 7 on my boat. After that grease all parts just lightly and reassemble.

I opened them up every year but applied just some more fresh grease and wiped away all unused grease; no need to really clean after the first time.

Lewmar sells kits containing all the pawls, springs and clips you need; expect some of the springs to be broken. I would get the kit and the special grease before you start the job. Also gets some rags and solvent ('peut' will do) for cleaning.

I had the Early standards; just pry off the clip and you can pull the top. Can't believe you wouldn't be able to get parts for those.

Found it: http://www.lewmar.com/products.asp?id=7466&lid=23634
