Lewmar hatch handle lock renew question ?

Some advice please from my colonial cousins :-)
I have Lewmar hatches onboard and they have red locking levers in the handle.
Trouble is, these levers have integral moulded ears that snap off over time and the levers drop out!

There is a web page on the Island Packet forum that discusses replacing these ears with dowel pins.
See link Island Packet Photos (LEWMAR HATCH HANDLE LOCK RENEWED - Album_ID 624)

He mentions dowel sizes 0.093 x 0.38 - what the heck is that ?

I am guessing its inches expressed as decimal ?
so 0.093 = 2.36mm & 0.38 = 9.65mm
or am I way off base ....

helpful clarification appreciated ... or alternative remedies ...

Re: Lewmar hatch handle lock renew question ?

Hhhmm.. Based on the pictures, I would just take mine apart and select a machine bolt of the right diameter to fit in that slot. Then I would just use that as the pin (cut to the right length). The diameter doesn't look crucial, as long as it fits in the slot!

P.S. Thanks for posting this as I have those exact handles and 1 is broken!

Re: Lewmar hatch handle lock renew question ?

.09350 inch diameter is a number 42 drill size. Its a standard drill size familiar to machinists.

Its not a common fastener or hardware store size. You can buy them from any good machinist supply store.

You could use the shank of number 42 drills cut off with an angle grinder or dremel metal cutting disk.

Chamfer both ends to make installation easier.

Good idea ..... But not in good ole Blighty it's not - nobody understands number 42.

Boat is in the Med and I am back home so can't prototype :-(

I thought this would be an easy one for the Americans ... Is my theory right and equates to the mm equivalent ?

Thanks for reminding me that I have a lot of broken ones too. You should be able to order the replacement part from a Lewmar dealer. I'll call and check.

Let me know how that works out ?
I understood you had to order the whole handle to get the lever - @ 30 odd quid !
