Lesson learned about using steel wool pads to clean deck hardware.

It's not worth the time. I hadn't cleaned the stainless steel in years and found that when I started all over again using 3m's cleaner wax, WOW what a differance. The cleaner wax really cleaned things up very nicely, took blimished and rust off, and put a water resistant coat on the SS too. I guess my friend Debra was right, it's stainless steel, not stainfree steel.

Gotta watch using the regular steel wool pads that aren't SS. The standard household type such as SOS pads will imbed steel in your hardware and rust.

You shouldn't really use any abrasives at all. Scratching stainless steel will cause it to rust faster unless it is re-passivated or electropolished.

Bronze wool pads work well.
