Re: Keel sump repair

We split the 14 ply laminate into three layups, 5 per on the first two, 4 on the last with the biggest pieces. Here is the first 5 ply layup prepped and applied, with a peel ply. All careful hand lam. The keel bolt holes are filled with modeling clay.

Morning! The woven roving is a 1200 and the DB is a 1700. No stitch matt for a more high quality epoxy layup with zero filler material.

First 5 plies with the peel ply removed and a light 60 grit sanding.

Re: Keel sump repair

Second 5 ply laminate applied. This layup is at approximately a 22:1 scarf ratio.

There was a big low in the bow of the keel stub, so before applying the second lam we patterned an extra 7 plies to fill in this low. Therefore this wet layup was 12 plies thick at the bow!

Final 4 ply layup, for a total of fourteen plies. Except on the bottom of the bow, where there's 21.

Re: Keel sump repair

Since we are tearing the old battery box apart and I am unsure on the age of the batteries, we are going to replace the bank. I had six 6V Dynos that are rated at 245 amp hours each.

Was thinking about lithium batteries till we found all that extra work for minaret to do. We then considered Firefly batteries but in the end I think we might go with Walmart golf cart batteries till we get ready for another trip to Mexico in five years. In five years, hopefully, I get the all clear from my oncologist.

The cool thing about this project is the chance to do the electrical system right. Or at least better than the old owner. No offense to him and lord knows I've taken some shortcuts but some of the splices are down right dangerous. The wire runs are convoluted and just plain old stupid.
The old battery box was rotting from the inside. Looks like the PO had a battery leak or something.

This is the bottom of the battery box. That black spot is a hole where the acid ate through. It is all rotten wood. The only thing keeping it together is the fiberglass shell on the inside.

..... and people wonder why I always recommend an encapsulated keel to newbies looking for a boat.... Just one more thing to not worry about :>)
