Lemme say that you are the luckiest man ever for having the guru of all gurus right there in your backyard... Smartest thing you ever did was having minaret on the job...

That explains it !!!
Bet you did a little "shimmy wiggle" dance too...

Can you imagine not having minaret's discount??? YeeeOwch!

Oh man... Now Hooked has to remark all his charts with the extra 1mm draft restriction !!!

Edwin and I have talked about this. He has a lot of good info!
Agreed. Minaret is a wonder. Great worker and a helluva good guy! I like his helper also. They make a good team. Glad I could put his daughters through college with this repair!!
Turns out my discount at Fish is a bit better than his!

Re: Keel sump repair

Tomorrow they are "potting" the keel. Where will I be? At work...grrrrrrr. Have to pay for this somehow I guess.
I really wanted to be there for this though. I'll have to make do with pictures.

Definitely better than not being able to have this done right...Looks like there's still plenty of tasks ahead to help with...

Re: Keel sump repair

Question, how much stronger, if any is a keel stub like that compared to bolting the keel directly to the bottom of the hull as is done in most new boats?

That's a question with an "it depends" type answer. As with the right engineering & construction, both can be equally as strong. But given eqivalent material thickness, the structure with the stump/sump will be a lot strong, due to it's geometry.

As in essence you're comparing a reinforced arch (hull with a bolted on keel), to a reinforced arch with an integral semi-box beam on top of it (hull with a stump/sump & reinforced hull).

So with the latter, you have the advantages of both geometry, plus a good bit more material to support the keel, & or spread out grounding loads.

As with that kind of a grounding with a bolted on keel, you'd likely be looking at major repairs to both the structure of the hull itself. Plus; the keel floors, & several bulkheads as well. And some of the interior furniture.
Assuming that she wasn't a write off, or didn't get reclamied by Neptune.

Re: Keel sump repair

Minaret will add to this later. I'll post some pics in the interim though.
Yesterday they potted the keel while I was at work. By all accounts it was a great success. The keel is nice and, what? Square? Plumb? It is exactly where it needs to be.

Aft keel bolt with 1/2" ply acting as the G10 that will eventually go there.

Today I started grinding the inside.

What a job that was. Still have the front grid boxes to do. Maybe tomorrow I'll hit those.
Minaret has a bunch of photos of the potting.

This is where having a buddy like minaret helping you pays off. Here's a secret. Cold shower after grinding. The pores close and the glass washes away. So far minaret is correct. I'm showered up and no itching.

As a boat builder, I can tell from your photos that you are getting a first class job done. And I have worked with one of the best, Jim Stohr.
