Keel modifications

I know there is not one answer to my question but I would like some imput. I am contemplating the purchase other a 56 foot boat but it has a 7.5 draft. Is it possible to modify the keel, if so how much and how do you go about it and what can you expect the cost range?

Re: Keel modifications

Is way cheaper to walk away and found a shallow draft boat or even a 6 or 5 ft draft around....You dont mention if is a fin keel or full keel internal ballast etc... just saying...

Re: Keel modifications

It is certainly possible. Any competent naval architect should be able to draw up a set of plans to do so, but the cost involved probably won't be worth it.

Re: Keel modifications

Draft reduction is very doable. Contact Mars Keels in Canada. They design and build lead bulbs to add to existing keels. In short, you would determine the amount of draft reduction, figure out how much weight was lost after the existing keel is cut and then add a bulb at a certain percentage heavier than what was removed. Mars will calculate the weight of the bulb and provide you will all the fasteners and instructions. Check out this link for additional information.
