Re: I've got the gelcoat blues...

You've probably already seen this, but just in case, check out this video. It might help. I am horrible at matching colors. Fortunately, mostly my work has been on motorcycles lately, so I paint the entire part. Probably not a choice for you.

Basics On Gelcoat Color Matching : Boatworks Today

Good Luck!

Actually, a sufficient amount of MEKP will end all those problems.

As to cameras not capturing what your eye sees, every film type has a different color sensitivity and range response. As does every type of digital image sensor. Some intentionally trade off spectral response for other reasons. And then, every color printing media (real paper or inkjet pigments or dyes) again has different abilities, as do color monitors of all types.

If you do a little fast reading on the web, you'll find there are some particular colors like "periwinkle blue" and the dayglo colors that have eluded reproduction for many years across many media. Don't lose sleep over it.

[QUOTE=HappyMdRSailor;1897779]Or greens... literally...

SO I'm no bumbling gelcoat repair newb, but I ain't no minaret either by any means... But I'm having one heck of a time with a gel match issue on a "cute as hell" boat I'm trying to flip... (insert cute as hell boat here)

I did a restoration a few years back on a Tornado Cat. I wanted GO BLUE colors & found Sherwin Williams "SATETY YELLOW" 2-part Epoxy paint great, easy to spray, 1/4 the cost of 'marine paint'.

Indeed... I took some vid and photos with the handycam, and was APPALLED at the technology we thought was state of the art 5 yrs ago! $500 camera with built in 80G HDD... Max pic resolution? 480x640! It was the only thing thus far that would reproduce the colors... I'll post the fuzzy shot of the straight "smidge too red GCP spot" that was polished out... The vid, you can just barely make out the halo distinction... vid settings are LP/SP/HQ, way to dumb it down for us Sony! Had the settings on LP without knowing it... Musta been left that way from some movie making session where I wanted to capture the... er... ending...

Net-net... this cam captures the colors... resolution, focus and lighting are the obstacles...

HA! Indeed! As well as my recent Tourette's episodes...

The digital sensors for sure... Some pics I took show the test spots as bright yellow against a reddish yellow hull... exact opposite of what I see!

I'm not dismayed... this is simply one tricky job...

I have no idea why I'm even posting this crappy pic.... I had to put the arrow in so you might be able to see the CGP match being a smidge too red...

Guess I got excited cause it's the only thing capturing true colors...

Re: I've got the gelcoat blues...

Did nice new laminated beams & marine grade. Gotta glass & fair today. I'm slammed, working seven days in an effort to please all clients. Nice to be on my own again, no yard to run, no crew to hand hold.

Slammed is awesome, and client approval is paramount! I always crack a smile when people say how nice it must be to be self employed...

***edit*** New deck beams look sweeeeet!

Sounds nice. Very. Sun won't really be up here for another eight months.
