Thanks everyone for the very useful and thoughtful information. Once again it shows the value of these forums and helpfulness of the boating community. I'm in L.A. for the holidays, the boat is in Florida and I live in Switzerland. I plan to thoroughly investigate the problem in January, find a competent fiberglass person and have the repair done professionally and correctly. If there is any flexing or denting on the inside I will add structural support. But I will probably never know what caused the problem.
