is there clear top coat paint above the waterline

I'm in the process of repainting my fiberglass yacht, I want to paint a clear coat above the waterline on the sides of the boat. I'm removing all the paint to fiberglass and repainting everything.

I want my artist friend to paint a painting on the sides of the boat and clear coat above his painting.
Is there any product out there that is a clear coat for fiberglass boats? I know this is an unpopular thing to do but I'm looking for product that might give me a solution to this issue.

Depends on what kind of paint your friend uses. The solvent in two pack paints like Awl grip will dissolve other paints. In any case, don’t trust it to a monkey. [emoji56]

Thanks GordMay happy to be here.

he uses acrylic based paint. I intend to paint the boat with a white top coat, let him paint over it and paint the clear coat on top. any suggestions?

Hello, So much for jokes about monkeys. What was it that Queen Victoria used to say?

It is my understanding that Awlgrip have spent The past three years developing a special clear coat. I do not know its properties or if that development is finalized.

Mr. Tony McCormick might know/ Tony@tmccormick>ca

Re: is there clear top coat paint above the waterline

edgar, you want marine grade "coatings" (they get insulted if you call it paint) for everything. Artwork on a boat's hull is often vinyl that is adhered to a boat. I'm not sure what the big fancy cruise ships do.

But it sound like you need to contact Awlgrip, unless you find other products, and then work your way backwards from the clear coat, to the art colors, to the white topsides paint and primer. If they are all not recommended as compatible by one manufacturer? You may find it all melted, or burning out in the sun. Boats just aren't the same as murals on brick and plaster.

Computer generated vinyl is the current way to go.

Google vinyl boat wrap. I’m pretty sure they can scan your friends art and put it on your boat. Should be good for six or seven years and then it comes off pretty easy.

Talk to an auto paint/body shop about a two part automotive polyurethane base paint (followed by art work) with automotive matching clear coat top coat.

Whatever type of coating you use, grab a small piece of MDO plywood, paint it with your hull base, then your friends artwork paint and then clear coat to make sure whatever product you use wont make the artwork run

None of this would be a problem for a clever monkey. They would probably lay down a tack coat to seal the art work then flatten it out with more clear. No problemo.

I thought that I would chuck my 10 Cents worth. Doing vinyl isn't easy as boats have compound curves, also you pay by the meter (yard). All vinyls and laminates are not equal. We did an around the yacht in 2007. I'm in Fremantle, Western Australia. The boat was done in Cape Town (South Africa) only 3 months before. By the time it arrived in Fremantle the graphics were changing colour. I took a piece off the boat and it was like a crisp packet. Probably the cheapest vinyl that you could get. We re-did 7.2 meters down each side with new print. We used Avery wrap film and the matching laminate. The graphics are still on the boat which has gone around the world 1 & 1/2 times since we did it. They still look quite OK. This will just show that the result can be very different, so use someone who isn't going to cheat you! You are likely to pay around $250/meter. But this can obviously vary from shop to shop. Incidentally, Anasarzi Girl is up for sale. If any fancies a trip around the world!

Re: is there clear top coat paint above the waterline

We did once use standart 2K Polyurethane paint from International to paint a huge wild picture onto a dinghy.
The trick was to work wet in wet and avoid sanding in between.
The first few layers of 2K PU clear paint were sprayed on wet in wet as well.
Paint is still on. No problems.

To work wet in wet and in one go is was good to have a group of artists doing it together.
