Ion Drive Traction Hull???

I saw these two the other day. Consider combining the Hydrophobic surface treatment with the possibility of shape modification. It seems possible that a hull could be conceived that was propelled partially by molecular forces. Also, is there an application of the surface laser treatment that might replace bottom paint? Somebody should take these short sighted geeks sailing - on the same boat.

Science is cool.

Science IS cool... speculating on how it changes things is even cool-er!

How about an anchor that self-sets? You drop it in and it digs itself into the substrate auto-magically using the same principles.

Re: ION DRIVE TRACTION HULL???

So if we make a hull with this etch treatment with it jump back onto land when the boat is splashed?

Or worse, will all the water run out from under the boat so that it sinks immediately?

Sorry, couldn't resist a little silliness.

If it works, you won't be able to stop without reverse engine. The boat may just lie on its side on top of the water.

Actually he may have a point. Buoyancy is the result of water pushing up. It a metal prevents contact with water, it may sink quickly.

Re: ION DRIVE TRACTION HULL???

I read the title and thought someone had come up with a way to cheaply mine the dilithium crystals necessary for the drive unit. The metal hull would not sink if it contained unobtainium.
