Re: Interior layout...why?

30 years ago I bought a 40' wood hull, it had 4 sister boats and I went to see them. Then did my thing.
Central cockpit is the only place to be on a washing machine sea! (Wind over Tide) my boat had a big bluff stern, so I made that the Saloon and galley set athwart, ( seats 8 at a push) I put a 1/2 floor (up 3 steps) in the cockpit covering the engine, then, covered the ceiling and turned it into a wheel house with port and aft access, floor access to engine going forward S'B access to bosun locker and Engine, batteries. fwd, port side double cabin, port single cabin, fwd port WC, fwd again to bow double cabin with anchor winch batteries under.
NB: I must say that you need to get the Tanks in first, we have 2 x Water 1 x Fuel and 1x Waste. All the Batteries are very low, but, not so low that you lose engine start with the boat 1/2 flooded cos you hit a shipping container, also battery runs are kept short. steering is hydraulic to wheel in Wheel and direct above deck aft.
I experience a lot of boats by working as crew to many of the old boys who sailed short handed.
If I get too tired or need a break, I back my jib and tighten my main, and relax, cos with a big long keel my lee way isn't a problem.
