Insulation for complex surface

I am trying to insulate the underside of the chain locker which opens to the v-berth. The fiberglss build up is quite complex and is solid glass so there is no insulation there whatsoever.

I have been looking at Styrene sheets but it will be a nightmare to cut it up and attach it. I am also considering polyurethane foam but unsure if it will stick to the fiberglass surface.

What would you recommend I use for insulating a complex surface?

I wrapped my refrigerator with peel and stick on tinfoil backed furnace duct insulation. that would work great for irregular surfaces.

How about something like this, though not sure were you would buy it state side.

30mm Thinsulex TLX Silver Multi-foil Insulation | Air-tight Vapour Barrier

Foil and thinsulate were the key words after I saw it used on another boat recently.

Make paper templates to cut the right size and glue up.

Closed cell spray insulation seems like the obvious choice here.

Agree. And, it will stick to fiberglass quite well.

Foam is the way to go. You can get it in spray-cans at you autoparts dealer. Fairly expensive, but worth it.

Re: Insulation for complex surface

I used US CG approved foam in place flotation foam To make my gemini unsinkable. As a side effect I was able to eliminate one of the two heaters required to keep the boat warm and very cold temperatures. Stuff sticks to anything.

Spray cans are best for small quantities but if you have a large job you can buy in 2 quart containers that make quite a lot for moderate price

Get a Forth-pac and you make short work of it. once you get the feel for how much to spray on verses how much expands, you will have little cleanup and finishing. It sticks to everything, so mask everything you don't want it on.

Re: Insulation for complex surface

I used Armacell fire-retardent foam sheet below the cockpit, which is shaped with winch mounts and cockpit surround - no smooth areas anywhere. Available in rolls from about half inch or less to 1". I used clear, stiff plastic bags to mark templates with whiteboard markers (wipes off so you can use the same plastic over and over) and glued the Armacell with contact adhesive. Tedious, but simple and clean in our aft cabin.

Is that the expanding polyurethane foam that’s sold in home improvement stores as insulating foam?

And the other question; is it closed cell? I am not sure the cheap stuff is, which means water vapour could soak into it.

Read the label before you buy it.
