It's LD50 is about 3g/kg, about 8 times higher than methanol. It's a bit lower than toluene at 6g/kg, but I find it a really good sign for long term toxicity that acetone is commonly present in the body anyway.

Good practice when using any solvent is to wear disposable gloves.

It's not the 'tone I worry about so much, but whatever people are washing off with it. You are just thinning it down and allowing it to penetrate your skin much more efficiently. I always start with lots of hot water and abrasive soap like Go-Jo before resorting to any other more toxic option. Very hot water is surprisingly effective.

I just built a new propane locker and totally understand how you got your hands covered. I also risked body pollution and used a rag with Acetone. Then I washed my hands with mechanic shop Hand Cleaner (can't remember brand name) and rinsed a LOT! Then I drank a couple beers to flush it out from the inside.

This is how I combat food poisoning... kill it with alcohol.

I'm of the crowd that quit using 5200. Once broke a caulking gun trying to squeeze that s@$! out of the bloody tube.

Still don't know why people use 5200.

But you can get it out - and if you use all the ideas recommended here you will be on the hospital bed totally free of the stuff.

Well, that's the thing with 5200 - you squeeze out a 3mm blob and it covers the boat, you, the marina and at least two boats in the marina next to yours. Usually a couple of boatyard dogs also.

I don't understand the physics, but them's the facts.

When I was working in the boatyard, the joke was if someone opened 5200, by the end if the day it was in all of us! The key is to wear 2 pairs if disposable gloves, that way if 1 rips you have a back up on. I have big hands so I wore 3 pair!

So far I've not had any trouble with the stuff. I've found that a razor blade will remove it quite easily after it cures. On the other hand west system suggested acetone, isopropyl alcohol or paint thinner to remove uncured epoxy resin, but I had no luck with it. Plain ole soap and water worked much better.
