In all of this (sticky) experience here, has anyone used 5200 to stick natural rubber to gelcoat? I know that is not its primary purpose but I have read of people using it that way on caravans, just not on boats.

i have had to readjust my dismay- my boat will be watertight at least- but if my boat had a hint of craftsmanship it is gone- hidden underneath hand fulls of 5200- i have decided to make water shoots down the sides .... why not go all the way. i at least decided to change the color of the boat to white so the billowy puffy places will blend into the landscape- i have come to terms believing that the boat is now reminiscent of a tall ship where i will layer and layer paint upon paint and make it look like the Mayflower and the look is 'integrity' - function over form.... i meant to do that

I was involved in trying to keep a sinking boat afloat. They were headed for Isla Mujeras from the Rio Dulce. They hailed us at 3 am saying they were takin on a lot of water. We hauled anchor and got to them by morning. A young guy aboard their boat and I dove the wooded boat and tacked copper sheeting to stem the leak. When this hammering of the tacks cause the leak to get worse we switched to 5200. There was 5200 floating all around us, on my bathing suit, in my hair, in my ears, dive mask, everywhere! I had long long blonde hair and thought I'd have to shave it all off . But it made for a good story when someone would say, a month later, that I have something in my hair

The 5200 did slow the leak down enough for them to get to Isla for haul out. They had to use crow bars to get the copper sheeting off, taking a lot of saturated rotten wood with it.

Piano wire works great, also a sharpened putty knife, to cut the 5200 before trying to pull out the hardware.

For those looking for a more dedicated version, they make a variety of clay cutting wires for pottery which are dirt cheap and very effective.

Yeah, great advice! I tried it on my classical guitar last night and all it did was burn off the lacquer in a small quick flash fire. So then I tried taking the string off the guitar first ... but which one? The skinniest one made sense but melted in a heartbeat (mine). The thickest one did better, taking two heartbeats to melt. I then reasoned that you meant a steel-stringed guitar but I don't have one. I try to keep my fingertips soft and sensitive for those times when Lady Luck stops by.

Then my McGuyver training kicked in and I remembered I had an old garrote stashed with my John Wayne and other memorabilia from those halcyon days of fun in the sun. [Gens X, Y, and Z may PM me for a translation.]

Heating the garrote resulted in the boat stinking like a slaughter house but did in fact solve the problem, albeit indirectly: when the 5200 realized how f ing serious I was, it liquefied and ran off.
