Re: i am re-naming my boat '5200'

In all of this (sticky) experience here, has anyone used 5200 to stick natural rubber to gelcoat? I know that is not its primary purpose but I have read of people using it that way on caravans, just not on boats.

As a world-wide community service, I offer the following explanation of the differences:

5200 = Ginger

4200 = less aggressive = MaryAnn

Cheap silicone = self-explanatory = stay away

Re: i am re-naming my boat '5200'

i have had to readjust my dismay- my boat will be watertight at least- but if my boat had a hint of craftsmanship it is gone- hidden underneath hand fulls of 5200- i have decided to make water shoots down the sides .... why not go all the way. i at least decided to change the color of the boat to white so the billowy puffy places will blend into the landscape- i have come to terms believing that the boat is now reminiscent of a tall ship where i will layer and layer paint upon paint and make it look like the Mayflower and the look is 'integrity' - function over form.... i meant to do that

Removing fittings and hardware that have been bedded and/or "sealed" with 5200 can be eased by the liberal application of a heat-gun before/during the removal process... Tricky at times but better than tearing up the gel-coat.

Re: i am re-naming my boat '5200'

He he, your thread title remind me of the book "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float"

I was involved in trying to keep a sinking boat afloat. They were headed for Isla Mujeras from the Rio Dulce. They hailed us at 3 am saying they were takin on a lot of water. We hauled anchor and got to them by morning. A young guy aboard their boat and I dove the wooded boat and tacked copper sheeting to stem the leak. When this hammering of the tacks cause the leak to get worse we switched to 5200. There was 5200 floating all around us, on my bathing suit, in my hair, in my ears, dive mask, everywhere! I had long long blonde hair and thought I'd have to shave it all off . But it made for a good story when someone would say, a month later, that I have something in my hair

The 5200 did slow the leak down enough for them to get to Isla for haul out. They had to use crow bars to get the copper sheeting off, taking a lot of saturated rotten wood with it.

Piano wire works great, also a sharpened putty knife, to cut the 5200 before trying to pull out the hardware.

I also wear 2 or 3 pair of nursey rubber gloves, (from the wife of course!) and I don't ever have leak problems when I bed something with 5200. And its easy to remove bedded items from the deck or what ever with a hunk of guiter string, with a couple of wooded handles!! I guess it all comes down to how sloppy a workman yall are LOL !! just sayin Ive seen boats that would never sail without 5200
You have convinced me that 5200 is now in fish. I will stick to clams.

Re: i am re-naming my boat '5200'

I learned the hard way but have now mastered it.

You folks out there with so much more experience should have figured it out by now.

I feel more self confident now. Thanks.

Hot guitar string works too, maybe easier to find. Lotsa boats have a guitar, not so many with pianos, lol!

For those looking for a more dedicated version, they make a variety of clay cutting wires for pottery which are dirt cheap and very effective.

That last 1/64th of an inch still on the surface is the hard part.

Yeah, great advice! I tried it on my classical guitar last night and all it did was burn off the lacquer in a small quick flash fire. So then I tried taking the string off the guitar first ... but which one? The skinniest one made sense but melted in a heartbeat (mine). The thickest one did better, taking two heartbeats to melt. I then reasoned that you meant a steel-stringed guitar but I don't have one. I try to keep my fingertips soft and sensitive for those times when Lady Luck stops by.

Then my McGuyver training kicked in and I remembered I had an old garrote stashed with my John Wayne and other memorabilia from those halcyon days of fun in the sun. [Gens X, Y, and Z may PM me for a translation.]

Heating the garrote resulted in the boat stinking like a slaughter house but did in fact solve the problem, albeit indirectly: when the 5200 realized how f ing serious I was, it liquefied and ran off.

Pussy.
