Hydraulic Backstay Tensioner

Mine just failed. Replaced with solid non-adjustable to keep me going until ram is rebuilt. Has anyone done this themselves or do I need a machine shop? The maker no longer exists. Local shops have told me it could take months, therefore the rigid fix. Since I now am not in a hurry, can it be done on my own?

Not a "how to" (there are many threads discussing these) but it talks about what usually fails and some ways to prevent early failure.
