Hull painting with Roller and Tipping

I forgot to take a picture today after I primed my bilge. But here's one from yesterday when I plugged the hole.

Well thanks guys. Today I got the first Vintage Green on. Unlike the Kermit green of last year, I love this colour. It took me all day to rub down, wash with hose, clean with Norglass cleaner, tape off and paint. In between each side I also had to move the scaffolding.

Hopefully Tuesday evening, I'll get the final coat on. I'm going to 'roll and tip' the final coat.

After I got home I also had to prepare and then paint the rudder. It's sitting in my garage and it's quite big and heavy.

Nice one! I know the pain of having to not only mix and prep your own paint, but also move the scaffolding as you go. Great job!

Guys, before I put the all important final coat on. What's the difference in 'wet' sanding and 'dry' sanding as in results? Today I prepared the surface by dry sanding 180 with a mouse sander. Then washed it down with the hose and then wiped it with a cleaner made by the paint company before using the roller.

As suggested I took the blue tape off already and will put new tape on prior to new paintwork.

I won't bore u with a new picture, as it looks the same as the last pictures. But today I managed to put the final coat of green on. I went and purchased an expensive paint brush and tried 'tipping'. But, I don't know why but after just a meter it looked terrible. Possibly the paint wasn't thick enough, or wrong type of paint brush?

Anyway, I just did it with a roller so it has an orange peel look.

Hi RC. Lots of variables to manage with Roll and Tip. In a nutshell I have found:


1. Easiest with two people.
2. Needs a very good quality roller (and brush, but mainly the roller)
3. All the usual temperature stuff, but since you are probably in enviably mild weather I am not going to even look at how nice it is down there to comment.
4. Lots of piss-farting around with thinner etc on sheets of tin or similar is well worth it.


Are you planning another coat?

More likely too thick. When I done mine in white the thinned paint could have passed for milk.

There will be none of that froggy stuff 😒

Na, the paint supplier said two top coats is enough. And I think it will be. As I thought I was going to roller and tip, I rubbed it back pretty good and there were very few places you could see the primer. And knowing I only needed a liter each side out of a 4 litre tin, I put the second coat on pretty thickly.

I think you might be right Reefmagnet. The brush strokes stayed in the paint and that's what I thought looked awful so after a meter I ditched the idea and rolled over. It still looks nice I think.

That's pretty much what happened to us, so I just rolled on the last coat. Sure, it's not glassy perfection but after the scrapes and nicks we've put into it in our first cruising season, I'm kinda glad it's not perfect!!

Tricky if you haven't done it before

Not sure what type of paint you are using but if it is a two part, cross-thatched polyurethane, like Awlgrip or Alexseal , you use minimum roll passes with even pressure at beginning and end of stroke to keep an even film thickness.
Changing your 4" quality foam roller(like Stanley's) every 10 minutes or so.

When the paint start to tack off any roller lines will magically disappear
