I agree to leave the dent. You want to be able to inspect it closely on each subsequent haul out.

Personally...I don't like any fairing on the bottom more than 2 to 3" below the boot stripe.

You want to see if your hull is deforming after a storm or grounding.

Luckily mine is very fair, so it looks good....but if it wasn't.... I would not fair it.

4.) Be VERY careful with copper coat and dissimilar metals. I've seen a couple of boats now where it's been applied to steel and stainless, and completely failed. I'm not saying don't use it (if we had the £7k, I'd highly consider it), but just spend your time prepping properly.

EDIT: I think I know how your bilge works... is it just a box that sits inside your keel? If so, fill and fair the hole - no worries. Just be really careful though of any water seeping out of that bilge box and into your keel itself - that's where you'll get rust. If you can, fill your bilge with spray foam (if you haven't already) - that'll help limit water intrusion.

you got it. Just a box. I shone a torch into the hole and it was very dry in there, on top of the keep, which I suspect is concrete. I figure, I'll always know if the bilge starts leaking as water will disappear from the bilge. Not that I want it to go into the keel. But I don't think a little bit would hurt. Then as soon as I pick up its leaking, I'll have to fix it again. But, if I seal it well enough and keep it painted , hopefully it won't ever leak. I put a coat of 2 pack primer over the hole tonight. Tomorrow I'll put some putty over the hole. It's so hot down here at the moment I'll probably have to plug it twice as the first one will no doubt sag into the hole.

yep, I've not used any fairing below the water line. I got the final coat of primer on the top sides done tonight. I've still got three coats of primer to put on the below water line and keel though.

There are some minor places that I spotted once I put the grey primer on that I thought I should have spent more time rubbing them back and using fairing. But I guess I'd never be satisfied if I follow down that path.

Vintage Green, which was its original colour, but I'm adding a red, almost port wine stripe around the toe rail.

Yeah, I know. I'll have to live with the result. My wife wants me to paint it white.. But just about every boat around here is white. And I think white would ruin the uniqueness of my ketch. Make it quite plain.

Whatever the result, it has to be 100% better than what it was.

(Without derailing the thread...) They were both 11m masts which left the boat severely underpowered, so this season we swapped the foremast for a 16.7m stick. Just waiting on some stainless chain for the bobstay then testing should begin in the first / second week of Jan....

16.7 m and 11m Mizzen..

Arn't you going from under powered to over powered

My main is 12.2m I think and my Mizzen I'm not sure, I'd have to pull out the plan but I think it's about 8m. In light winds I'm pretty much dead.
