So, not an old thread at all, and we don't know how the story ends 'cause it is ongoing. Hoping for a good outcome for the chap.

Re: Hull leak after drilling mistake

I once needed an urgent careen. I did it by coming alongside a jetty just as the tide was dropping and ran her aground with the boat leaning against the jetty not far from the shore. I was able to get the job done between tides and floated her off on the next high tide. Just one more desperate idea for you to consider.

Ummmm....No. Everything I read today happens tomorrow. No. that doesn't sound right. (Let me think about it)

What was the question again?

Re: Hull leak after drilling mistake

The toilet wax or even the plumbers putty or a reasonable temporary fix but they will impede the epoxy that you need to eventually fix that leak. The two-part epoxy that's in a stick where you mash it together can be put in there and will cure underwater. That would be the first step then you can disassemble the cabinets and do a of class work depending how big the whole is possibly you can just put Marine Tex over top of the stick putty epoxy

Hey; Thanks for the education Jim, very strange how one can look at something & not see it. I'll write it off to old age & stupidity on my part. I never have enjoyed using a computer that continually reminds me it is smarter than me.

Re: Hull leak after drilling mistake

I had to fix a leak cruising. Nothing on the inside worked due to water pressure. I used toilet bowl setting wax on the outside. It is sticky and stopped the leak. Then I used 5 minute epoxy putty on the inside and continued cruising. I added a couple of layers on glass cloth many months later.

Re: Hull leak after drilling mistake

If you are still looking for the hole from the outside, perhaps you can locate
a spot inside the hull with easy access that will provide for easy measurement to the inside leaking hole. With the smallest drill bit ... say 1/16th" drill
a hole through to the outside whereby you can quickly insert a small nail
through a gob of epoxy paste so that it can be easily located from the outside.

Better would be to hang a plumb line and put the hole far enough up
to be out of the water. That would at least give you a vertical reverence
point from which to search.

I really like the idea mentioned earlier of using magnets. If you go on the
internet you can find some super duper strong magnets that are small in
size. I believe two of these magnets will have a strong pull at 1 inch away
in distance. Better than one magnet and a piece of steel.

I bought two of these (one for my mom) to hang towels on the refrigerator
and she is not strong enough to pull the magnet off unless she pulls with both hands on the towel.

Re: Hull leak after drilling mistake

My guess as to why so many marinas turned down the requests to be hauled is the time of year. They are all actively hauling boats for the winter. If they haul you, you will be in the way. This is particularly the case if you are asking to be relaunched. This means they will have to work around you to get you back in after they haul additional boats.

You might get lucky if you can wait until you are one of the last boats hauled.
