How to track maintenance?

So for years I didn't adequately track the maintenance that I did on my boat, and then subsequently did an inadequate job keeping a list in a physical log book. When I went to sell my prior boat, I found that I had to try to figure it all out, and it wasn't easy. Now, with a new boat, I'm aiming to be more organized. Has anyone found an online or app solution that works well?

If you have an IPad try “Shipshape”, I just downloaded it but have not tried it yet.

Cool - I just downloaded an iPhone/iPad app called "Boat Boss". Seems really good - track maintenance, costs, parts and other stuff.

General aviation aircraft log books are something to think about. Small but well done. One for the engine and one for the airframe, maybe one for the electronics (avionics.)

If you can't write it down in the log why would you think you will write it down in an app?

Re: How to track maintenance?

I got a small engine mechanics log on Amazon.
I dislike electronic records as they have a tendency to disappear.

Your post 4 rant had nothing to do my simple statement. But I’m glad you got to do another little valuable poke post from it to make your internet experience rewarding and satisfying.

I keep a separate maintenance log, even though I do record engine hours, oil changes, etc. in my primary log in a separate column.

A separate maintenance log makes it easier to see what's been done and schedule what needs to be done vs. wading through pages and pages and pages of the primary log. In addition there is lots of other maintenance data in there...fuel and oil filter part numbers, hose sizes and lengths, etc.

I use a bound spine notebook. Spiral bound don't last long and pages are likely to get torn out.

Data Mining

Why do tech companies give everything away?

Because they make their money selling your data.

Why do prices of things go up?

Because all of these apps collect your data and build metrics that allow the people who buy your data to realize patterns.

Get a pen and a little spiral notebook and stop giving away data that allows people to charge you more for stuff.
Not to engage in thread-drift, but how do free apps drive up the price of things? How does corporate access to data on consumer patterns make things more expensive, rather than lowering costs due to less expensive marketing and sales analysis?

What have Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Waze, etc. made more expensive?

Hmmm were you aware that prices can change depending on your browser? If you use a Mac you can get a different price than using internet explorer? We’ve noticed this on occasion

Re: How to track maintenance?

Basic stuff - oil changes, filters, etc go in main log book.

Upgrades and refits - go in a "Composition Notebook" (not sure if it's called that outside US) Black and white marbled cardboard notebook with a hard spine.
This and a plastic file (dividers A-Z) to keep receipts are kept together with a bungee back in the nav station.

All instruction leaflets and notes on how to use equipment are kept in 3 ring binders loosely classified - "Electronics" "Engine" "Systems" etc.

All kept together in the nav station along with Ship's Inventory. I don't have to wonder where anything is. They are always kept together.

That being said, the biggest challenge is to keep them up to date.....

Re: How to track maintenance?

I have been using Excel for years, easy to set up easy to enter. color coded tabs for sheets on the bottom, easy to print out. Simple and easy. I keep it on a dedicated cigarette pack sized computer mountrd at the chart table on the boat along with opencpn, pilot charts and sailing directions. back up is a thumb drive.

no apps, easy to take a copy home, and everything reads excel.

Re: How to track maintenance?

I record all maintenance and upgrades in a Word document/chart that I then upload to Dropbox. In Dropbox my records are available on a computer, iPhone or iPad. Works for me.
