How Much Paint To Buy

I have a 30' Morgan and I want the hull/topside white, obviously anti-fouling paint on the bottom-side but any thoughts to how much white paint I'd need to purchase?

There's gotta be some online calculator, oddly I couldn't find one.

Re: How Much Paint To Buy

Different paints have different coverage abilities. That being said if you plan on doing more than one coat or plan on doing other areas a gallon will probably be the most economical way to go. It seems that buying two quarts of paint cost nearly as much as a gallon costs. A quart would probably get you one coat with some to spare. But when you decide to do the deck and cockpit and a second coat because the first was "a learning experience" then you'll wish you had the gallon.

I did my 36' topsides this summer. I bought a gallon of topside as well as primer and did two coats of each. I had a little bit over half left over in each. I've since used that on the cabin top and plan to finish the deck and redo the cockpit again (the "learning experience"). I most likely will not have to buy any more paint. Although I already have some from the first go at the cockpit....

Most paint manufacturers have web pages and info on prep, coverage, primers and finish paints. If you're new to marine painting, I would carefully read the product info. The paint makers want you to have success and provide lots of tips, etc.
These guys have a bunch of videos, http://www.jamestowndistributors.com also youtube.

Yep, both the folks who make paint, & those who sell it, can; tell you live, how much you'll need, as well as providing you with charts so that you can figure it on your own.
Sometimes owning a West Marine catalog comes in handy for such things, even if you never shop with them. As such types of catalogs tend to have tips on how much of X is needed for a project, and all kinds of interesting & useful info bits.

That definitely depends on the product, and all of them have the coverage published in the Technical Data Sheet. Number of coats you can see in the instructions or the TDS as well.
The coverage stated is indicative of what is covered by the contents of the can and in most cases is in square feet.
Its fairly easy to get the square footage of your boat. For topsides, measure the distance between the water line and the gunwale and multiply by the length of the boat + the transom. For bottom paint, multiply length X beam and multiply the result by .85. These are rough measurements enough to estimate paint quantity.

Further: The first thing to do is to pick a product - International Paints, Awlgrip, etc.
Then do the research and get the information for that particular product line and follow their recommendations for a paint system: fairing compound, primer, paint (which will include the catalyst + reducer/thinner), surface cleaner/prep, etc.
Once you have that established, you can easily get the TDS for each product and calculate the coverage using your boat measurements.

Re: How Much Paint To Buy

One gallon of semigloss Easypoxy was enough for me to roll and tip my topsides twice. (2 coats) This included the stern.

I had enough left to put a single coat on the cockpit area also.

I used one gallon plus one quart of CSC Micron to do the bottom plus an extra coat on the bow area and lower keel.

This on a Bristol 27.

Rolled and tipped 2 coats of Imron on Bluestocking in the summer. 41' on deck, 29' w/line. The activator and reducer contribute substantially to the volume of liquid produced. Have just under a quart of raw base paint left after completion.

On my Pearson 30 I need 2 quarts of VC17 to cover the whole thing below the water line.
