How much paint for cat hull?
We've had the boat two years and are about to have a coat of bottom paint applied by local yard. They have estimated that one coat of paint for the two hulls of our 40 ft. catamaran will take 4.5 gallons, at near $ 400 per gallon.
This is local yard price for Micron 66.
A friend has told me he calculated the coverage based upon experience with West Marine paint and thinks that a gallon and a half should do one coat, unthinned.
What has been your experience? How many gallons to put one coat on the hulls of a 40 ft. sailing cat. roughly?
or smoothly, we hope.

Re: How much paint for cat hull?
Can't help with the price, but on our 40' catamaran, it takes ~1.25 gal per coat for the entire boat using Micron 66 (and all other paints so far). So I think your friend's estimate is much closer than the yards.

Re: How much paint for cat hull?
Just painted my 36' Solaris Sunstar which is a keel boat drawing 3' 8", sorry, don't have the hull dimensions handy. Anyway, put on 3 full coats plus a 4th on the waterline, used 4 gallons.
I don't think I would trust your yard too much.

Re: How much paint for cat hull?
Just did Mulligan a Leopard 40, 8 weeks ago. It took 4 gallons non thinned for one coat of Petit Ultima SR60. Spent about 365.00 a gallon in a do it yourself yard.

4 gallons for a single coat? Did you do this yourself? Was the hull in full sun and hot? That quantity seems very high for that boat.

That is 3 gallons for two coats - which seems about what I would have thought for that boat. We have friends with a Lep40 and they also used 3 gallons for 2+ coats.

Re: How much paint for cat hull?
Just pathetic. They are yanking your chain, on both the price and the amount. Do you own pain man, it's easy on cats.
2 gallons for 2 coats with Micron 66. plus some extra in wear areas (really only 1.7 gallons.
34' cat.

Re: How much paint for cat hull?
Well my options are to wait until I can get up to Spanish Wells, or down to Fajardo I suppose. That might not be this season.

Leopard 45, five gallons for two coats and another on the leading edges and the waterline. Basically two gallons per complete coat.
