How do I use a computer to diagnose an outboard?

I have twin 300 Verados and I want to attach a computer to diagnose one of the engines because I am getting a "please visit an authorized mercury service center at your earliest convenience" warning message and I want to find out what is causing it. The message appears to have no more detail than that.

How can I do this? I assume the process is similar to using an OBDII diagnostic with a car. What kind of scanner do I need?

Re: How do I use a computer to diagnose an outboard?

I’m pretty certain that it’s more expensive than you want to pay.
Just like the only difference in Verado’s is the computer.
The 225 and 300 are the same motor, different computer.
But the price of the computer will blow you away.

However not knowing what system you have I can’t comment, but there is an amazing amount of data available on the bus that can be displayed on a plotter or what was called a Merc monitor.

For Verado specific questions, this ought to be a very good site to go to.

You need proprietary sealer software. Merc charges dealers more many thousands for the software

I know CDI and Seirra both make aftermarket software for independent shops but last I knew they were well over 2k.

Found links to some.

I had a “Merc monitor”on mine, among other things I think it converted the data on the can bus to NMEA 2000 and would display an amazing amount of data on my Garmin plotter as well as the gauge itself, things like oil temp, pressure, boost pressure, RPM, and on and on.

You'd be better off asking over at "The Hull Truth" forums where there are many more power/outboard users. There may even be a Mercury subform.

As others have pointed out the software is proprietary and expensive. That said, I would not put it past some software geek to have reverse engineered something similar.
