How can I remove sticky permanent caulking tape?

Hey,

had to remove a glued in window (macrolon).
Will reglue it with Sika 295uv.

Still I have a very hard time to remove the old caulking tape fully from the plywood recess.

The tape is out but some of the gooey stuff just stays in.
Not a good bonding base.

Tried already acetone, course sandpaper and even sand (hoped this would mix with the goo and stop it glueing).

Any other ideas?

Thanks so much,

Franziska

Can of compressed air, flip it upside down and spray, freeze the residue and abrade it off.

Mineral spirits? Xylene? Acetone is not much of a solvent for rubber-based adhesives.

Think chemistry. Figure out what it is, then pick a solvent.

Re: How can I remove sticky permanent caulking tape?

Thanks!

Love the idea with the freeze. Would be the first thing I'd try if it would have the freezing can here.

Unfortunately not the case and it's Saturday evening.

I'll try the other solvents I have on board.

Thanks!

Thinwater is correct. You need to find the right solvent. When my chemist gets home tonight, I'll ask her for a specific recommendation and post it.

Try some dry ice.

Coconut oil! Sure wOrth a try. Coconut oil removes most adhesives and will melt gum. It's the first thing I wold try.

Re: How can I remove sticky permanent caulking tape?

I'd go with the dry ice but can not get it right now.
Next time!

Got the two front windows ahead before winter...

Sanded now hard, rubbed it vigorously with a silicone remover and lots of cloth.
Now epoxied the frame and rubbed that in as well.
No pinholes so far.

Guess I can glue the side window tomorrow. We'll see.
Nightfall in France now.

Thanks again N8N8.

WD-40 will dissolve adhesives. Not sure if it'll handle your situation, but you probably have a can sitting around, so it won't hurt to try.

I'd go with xylene. The other suggestions will work, but then you're fighting an oily residue. Not with xylene.

Stinks and use gloves.

Re: How can I remove sticky permanent caulking tape?

Looks like it might be butyl. I've had good luck with Naptha on it.

Re: How can I remove sticky permanent caulking tape?

Yes seems butyl. WD 40, Naptha and Cocos Oil are out, I have to glue on the surface later.
Not a good idea with a possible oily contamination underneath.

Still thanks for the thoughts. As my previous post states this time I managed with sanding and lots of cleaning by silicone remover and acetone.

Marine Formula by DeBond Corp. I just got done removing old goop from my windows and frames. This is magic stuff that softens the glue or sealant so it can be scraped off. A little remaining could be removed with acetone. Probably causes cancer in Canadian rats but it really works.

Sorry to say, but my resident chemist just called in, having broken her arm in an airport parking lot. Guess I won't be able to supply chemical advice for a few days.
