Help! Rebedding windows

Help! I rebedded the windows on my 36' C & C & they still leak when it rains! What is the proper way to do this & what is the proper bedding material to use?

Re: Help! Rebedding windows

Remove the port light completely.

Look carefully to see signs of where the water is getting in from. Hopefully you can locate a problem. Sometimes port lights leak from water that actually gets in from elsewhere and travels "downhill" under the lining, sometimes it comes from a leaking frame or leaking screw holes. Or the boat may be flexing excessively.

Clean all the surfaces to be glued thoroughly. Then wash with acetone on a rag.

We use Sika 291 for a sealant, but there are others. Don't bother with house caulking.

Put a small blob of sealant in each screw hold, and a bead of caulking around the entire outside edge of the frame.

Replace frame.

Remove any excess.

If this is what you already did, then perhaps a PM to Minaret or MaineSail will give you a better answer.

Re: Help! Rebedding windows

Use Butyl. Will fill pukas and remains flexible so will handle expansion and contraction of the window and flex of the cabin. Mainsail sells a good quality butyl.

Hope you didn't use sillycone on your previous attempt. You'll have to get that all off as nothing sticks to sillycone even sillycone. Might have have to sand as well as scrape as the oils soak into the gelcoat.

Second this. Installed a number of new SS ports and rebidded all the rest. Used butyl tape on them all and so far bone dry.

Also caution against silicone. The PO used silicone on a lot of the ports and I had to work pretty hard to get a good surface for the new bedding. Had to clean, scrape, wipe with various solvents and cleaners and finally sand before I could get a good seal.

Re: Help! Rebedding windows

I think the 36 had frameless deadlights that fit rabbeted in the hull. If so, Dow 795 is the way to go.

C&C used a 2-part methacrylate structural adhesive (Plexus MA320?) on it’s frameless windows.

If these are indeed sheets of plexiglass or similar bedded directly to the cabin sides then I'll also vote for the Dow 795. Does a great job BUT it is incredibly sticky and messy. Guaranteed to get all over any uncovered surface within a 20' radius and it is a bear to clean off.
